CompactGUI is a free, open-source Windows utility that allows you to shrink modern PC game installation folders by 30% to 60% without deleting files or losing in-game performance. It acts as a user-friendly graphical interface for Windows’ built-in compact.exe tool, which utilizes transparent NTFS compression.

Games remain fully playable, and the operating system decompresses assets on the fly using your CPU with virtually zero frame rate drops. Core Compression Algorithms

When using the tool, you will choose from four distinct native Windows algorithms:

XPRESS4K: The fastest compression method with the lowest CPU overhead, though it yields modest storage savings.

XPRESS8K: A balanced mid-tier option offering a compromise between speed and compression ratio.

XPRESS16K: A more aggressive option requiring slightly more processing power to compress and decompress data.

LZX: The most aggressive compression algorithm that extracts maximum disk space, highly recommended for large games. Step-by-Step Usage Guide

Download the software: Visit the IridiumIO/CompactGUI GitHub Releases page and download CompactGUI.exe. It is a standalone, portable application requiring no formal installation.

Launch as Administrator: Right-click CompactGUI.exe and choose Run as administrator to ensure the tool has authorization to modify system files.

Select your target: Click Select Target Folder and locate the installation directory of the game you want to shrink (e.g., C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/[Game Name]).

Choose your settings: Select your preferred algorithm (LZX is generally preferred for modern hardware) and check Skip Files that are Poorly Compressed to bypass media assets like .mp4 files that won’t shrink anyway.

Execute compression: Click Compress Folder. A progress bar will show real-time statistics, final savings, and your reduction percentage. Managing Game Updates
